PET Pirates in Action at Lake Tisza

On 6 October, Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions Hungary volunteers became PET Pirates for a day, collecting approximately 1.5 metric tons of waste from the floodplain of Lake Tisza.

The PET Pirate Volunteer Day was over-subscribed, so ultimately 80 of our colleagues arrived at Dinnyéshát from Budapest, Debrecen and Pécs, where they started to collect trash. One half of the team immediately went out on the water and approached the contaminated areas in canoes, collecting waste from the floodplain. The collection was also a sorting exercise, with recyclable PET bottles, glass and metal being placed in separate bags. There was plenty of work to do, since plastic bottles crackled under rubber boots at every step beneath the leaves in the more polluted areas.

During the afternoon, the two teams took turns in the field, and by the end of the day, our colleagues had collected no less than 240 bags of waste in their quest to help clean up the Tisza floodplain. This represents approximately 1.5 metric tons of waste, at least 60 percent of which (glass, metal, plastic) can be recycled.
