In February 2009, the German government decided to launch a broadband strategy. The strategy pursues the goal of rapidly advancing broadband expansion in Germany in cooperation with the German states, communities and businesses. We support this endeavor by helping speed up the installation and expansion process. The strategy spells out clear goals regarding network expansion. By 2014, 75 percent of all German households are scheduled to have access to connections with a bandwidth of 50 Mbit/s or more. A nationwide high-speed infrastructure is expected to be in place by 2018. The German government has deliberately not specified which technology it plans to use. The idea is that different providers compete with each other in order to find the best solutions. In terms of network infrastructure installation and expansion, our focus is on finding the best-possible combination of technologies consisting of mobile communications technology, fixed-line technology, Internet Protocol-enabled infrastructure (IP) and wireless networks (WiFi).
