Telekom Albania

Why does corporate responsibility matter to our company?

Michael Tsamaz, OTE Group Chairman and CEO

At OTE Group, we strive to create a better world for everyone, through technology and innovation. In 2017, the Group continued its sustainable performance throughout its footprint, in Greece, Romania and Albania by further enhancing its positive impact on the economy, society, and the environment.

We achieved a stable economic performance despite external pressures, and we provided advanced communication and entertainment services to our customers, while also offering businesses the necessary tools to grow.

We remained the biggest – by far – investor in telecommunications in Greece, building the networks of the future all across the country, with fiber optics as our flagship project, thus tackling the digital divide.

Digital transformation is our Number 1 priority. We focused on changing people’s experience and lifestyle by deploying new technologies, developing new products, and exploring new ways of communicating with our customers.

At the same time, we managed to sustain our social contribution geared toward supporting vulnerable social groups with a particular focus on children. Furthermore, we continued to reduce our energy footprint and incorporate the principles of the circular economy into our activities.

In 2018, we drive forward our sustainable development strategy towards the same goal: using technology and digital transformation to change the world around us.

Challenges of Millennials – a Communication Forum

“Challenges of Millennials” was the topic of the first Albanian Communication Forum. This was mainly directed toward identification and demonstration of successful communication strategies between young people, professionals and corporates in Albania. As part of the event, representatives of business and media sectors shared personal experiences and provided examples to give the young audience of students, graduates, and early-career professionals the opportunity to broaden their knowledge about the core elements comprising effective communication as a mechanism for professional growth.

The forum was organized by “A Woman in Power”. The non-governmental association is made of young people and it works to empower young women in the fields of business communication. This project relates to Telekom Albania’s dedication to fostering education and communication in the country.

Vital Support for Hospitals in Albania

Medical Equipment for Two Hospitals
The Neurovascular Service at Tirana’s Mother Teresa University Hospital is the biggest medical center of its kind in Albania. Although the hospital offers specialized healthcare to 1,400 patients every year, it lacked the equipment necessary to provide respiratory aid to patients with a specific condition.

The same equipment was also needed in the Shefqet Ndroqi Hospital specializing in respiratory and pulmonary diseases. More than 13,500 patients are treated in this hospital every year.

Telekom Albania demonstrated its commitment to making a continuous contribution to the health system and provided the Neurovascular Service with its first CPAP and BiPAP machines. The Shefqet Ndroqi Hospital was equipped with seven additional BiPAP machines. This equipment is vital to patients suffering from respiratory complications and it provides non-invasive ventilation methods when the level of oxygen in the patient’s body drops below normal.

Support for the American Hospital
In association with the American Hospital in Tirana, Telekom Albania supported “Fondacioni ne Ndihme te Pancientit” in organizing a charity concert “More sounds now, and forever” at the Palace of Congresses. The income from this charity concert was used to assist children born with hearing problems by providing them with cochlear implants. This event helped to raise awareness among private institutions, businesses, public authorities, celebrities, and the general public. Our contribution to this event enabled the American Hospital in Tirana to acquire the special equipment needed to help children born with hearing problems.

IT Infrastructure completed for the Polytechnic University

The education system is another sector that Telekom Albania is keen on supporting. A major representative is the Polytechnic University of Tirana – one of the biggest universities in Albania, specialized in Information Technology and Engineering.

Telekom Albania helped this institution to build a network of devices for circulating information between academic staff and students. 14 laptops and a server provided by donations enabled a complete network to be set up that improves the quality of academic work.

Weeks of German Culture in Albania

30 Years of Diplomatic Relations between Germany and Albania” was the theme of the annual German October celebration. A series of cultural and artistic events around this anniversary were held during the month of October. Exhibitions by well-known artists, live performances by international musicians, public readings of works of literature, workshops, and in-field visits were intended to strengthen bridges between the two countries.

Telekom Albania has been a permanent contributor to this important project that showcases the best values of the two countries and facilitates exchange between the German and Albanian art communities.

Internet for the Tech Community

Oficina is an entrepreneurship and innovation lab that aims to gather anybody with an interest in technology, especially young developers. A number of events focusing on start-ups, new business models, technology-related courses, etc. were organized at the lab. Alongside mentoring and coaching, the event offers a lot of physical space to host activities.

Given Telekom Albania’s dedication to innovation and making technology available to society, we supported Oficina with an internet connection throughout 2017.

Green Ideas Competition 2017

Over a period of several years, Telekom Albania has supported the national competition “Green Ideas”. This activity is organized by Partners Albania, Center for Change and Conflict Management. This year marks the sixth edition of this competition. The objective of the “Green Ideas 2017” competition was identification, selection, and support of innovative ideas that aim to foster sustainable development. It is open to civil society, social organizations and small enterprises. Telekom Albania decided to support the idea that also best fits the CR pillars of the company. The winning idea in the 2017 competition came from “Gjirokastra Conservation and Development Organization” based in Gjirokastra. This organization aims to promote and support artistic, culinary, and tourism potential in the Gjirokastra region. It intends to use this project to raise awareness of traditions in the region and to help sustain its economy, culture and heritage.

Act Now

Telekom Albania supported the “Act Now” organization and their “Social Glow” project. The aim of this project is to tackle social problems such as unemployment, poverty, and the exploitation of vulnerable groups in the city of Tirana. The project was implemented by setting up a coffee bar employing people with disabilities, economic problems, and divorced women from rural areas. It serves as a social center where workshops, reading nights, and social events are held on a regular basis. The center features a separate space where children with special needs and performance talents can perform in front of an audience. It is open to anyone who needs a space to perform and a potential audience to attend.

Support for the Municipalities of Kamza, Saranda and Lezha

In 2017, Telekom Albania cooperated with three Albanian municipalities to support the refurbishment of the city’s kindergartens. This support was offered as part of our dedication to help improve infrastructure in the Albanian education sector.

The cooperation with the Municipality of Kamza carried out a partial reconstruction of internal premises at one of the main kindergartens in the city. This sponsorship contributed to creating better conditions for at least 150 kids in the community of Kamza who had previously experienced difficult conditions.

Telekom Albania also cooperated with the Municipality of Saranda in providing kitchen utensils for one of the city’s main kindergartens called “The 3 squirrels”. This project made a very important contribution to the community by improving access to education in an area with a pressing need for a well-organized kindergarten.

The Municipality of Lezha was supported by refurbishing one of the main Day Care Centers in the city. This center was in need of urgent work since it was no longer operating and the other Day Care Centers in the city were overpopulated. The refurbished building provides places for around 110 kids each year. The Municipality of Lezha has been a good partner of Telekom Albanian for many years.

City of Readers

Telekom Albania collaborated with the Municipality of Tirana and the “Art, Kulture, Integrim” Center on their “City of Readers” project. This aimed at transforming the City of Tirana into a city of reading, raise young people’s desire to read, promote a reading culture, and publicize the cultural values of our city. The project succeeded in revitalizing and building a functional library network for all age groups, and transformed the city’s libraries into a cultural and interactive environment offering cultural and recreational events. The Municipality of Tirana supported the “Art, Kulture, Integrim” Center by allowing it to use the existing premises of old libraries in the city for this purpose. These public libraries are cozy and fun places for all ages offering a variety of activities, focused on reading books. They also act a meeting point to discuss ideas and promote cultural activities, etc.

Integrated Management System

The improvement objective for 2017 was to enhance the performance and structure of the system as Telekom Albania strives to achieve continuous improvement in the performance of management systems within the company. This was achieved by implementing ONE Integrated Management System in 2017. This system manages all ISO Standards already implemented or pending implementation in the company. The Integrated Management System results in:

  1. Integration of the management structure:
  • One committee;
  • One team;
  • One internal audit;
  1. One integrated risk assessment approach for all systems whether they deal with security, health, IT, or environment. One risk approach in conformity with the recommendation by the ISO 3100 standard and group policies for calculating risk. This approach mitigates and records risks during iPF planning, and it generates a single risk matrix.
  2. One set of integrated objectives and targets and one set of programs enable complete integration of health and safety, environmental protection and other values within all the company’s processes from design and implementation, through sourcing to maintenance, selling and collection.

The integrated approach also makes it easy to add new ISO Standards within the scope of the single management system e.g.:

  • The new standards ISO 19600 Anti-corruption and ISO 37001 Anti-bribery were successfully certified in June 2017 as part of the Integrated Management System.

"Contribution to National Level" Prize

Telekom Albania was awarded the “Contribution to National Level” Prize by Partners Albania at a ceremony on 1 December. The award acknowledged Telekom’s major contributions supporting social, healthcare and environmental development in Albania. The contributions include stocking with books at the public libraries in the City of Tirana, donation of medical equipment to the “Shefqet Ndroqi” Hospital and the Neurology Service at the ”Mother Theresa” University Hospital Center, and the special contribution for research into the fight against dementia through the use of virtual reality.

This is the third award of its kind for Telekom Albania. In 2012, an award was bestowed on Telekom for its contribution to vulnerable communities and its long-term engagement in encouraging volunteering initiatives. Telekom Albania

In 2012, Telekom Albania became the first company in the telecommunications market in Albania to hold a triple ISO certification for its integrated Management System (IMS) on Quality, Environment and Occupational Health & Safety. All three certifications, based on ISO9001 for Quality, ISO14001 for Environment and OHSAS18001 for Occupational Health & Safety, were issued after an audit performed by TÜV Hellas (TÜV Nord). Since 2015, the company has been re-certified for its Quality Management System, Occupational Health and Safety Management System and Environment Management System for its business operations, in order to respond to long-term challenges. The relevant certificates were provided for the newly issued versions of ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 as well as for OHSAS 18001 img:2007.

Throughout 2017, Telekom Albania fully implemented the Integrated Management System to oversee all ISO Standards already implemented or to be implemented in Telekom Albania. Certifications of the new ISO 19600 Anti-corruption and ISO 37001 Anti-bribery Standards, as part of the Integrated Management System, were introduced during 2017.
