We combine this figure with our own CO2 emissions, then use this enablement factor to measure our overall performance in relation to climate protection. According to this figure, the positive CO2 effects facilitated for our customers in Germany were 71 percent higher in 2017 than our own CO2 emissions (enablement factor of 1.71 to 1).
The positive CO2 effects facilitated for our customers through the use of our products and solutions rose from 8.6 to 11.9 million tons in 2017. The main drivers for this development were the three categories audio conferencing, ride sharing and accommodation sharing which were not yet reported in the previous year. The strong increase in the use of our emission-reducing products and services (+ 3.5 million tons), especially in the segments connected car (+ 1.5 million tons), broadband services (+ 0.7 million tons) and smart logistics (+ 0.4 million tons) were also significant for this development.

Taking into account the latest, slightly increased Scope 3 emission values and the positive CO2 effects on the customer side (now including smart logistics), the value of the Enablement Factor ESG KPI for the Group in Germany would be 1.70 (calculated based on Scope 1-3 in metric tons CO2e: 7.5 million; positive CO2 effects: 12.8 million metric tons CO2e)

It is also used for reporting on the Global Compact principles 7 (Precautionary approach) and 8 (Promoting environmental responsibility).
